The Trades - Dungeons and Dragons Sequence
July 24/2025

If you watch the Halifax produced sitcom “The Trades” on Crave, you may stumble onto some familiar looking miniatures in Season 2 - Episode 2. In the recent season of this single-cam sitcom starring none other than Halifax TV royalty Rob Wells (The Trailer Park Boys), features an episode titled "Permittees". In the first 5 minutes of the episodes run-time, we get up close and personal with a colorful cast of supporting characters dawning a fantasy inspired wardrobe while playing Dungeons and Dragons. The miniatures present on the table are none other than our own custom creatures and characters, which can be seen in our gallery below. One of the miniatures, even gets front and center, prime time treatment, before being tossed off screen by the shows lead character Todd.

Most noteworthy are the distinctive hero characters, which were designed by Maelstrom's Matthew Goodmanson, custom for the episodes production. We had a blast creating and printing these miniatures and couldn't be more excited about how they looked in the final sequence. Unlike Todd, we fully support a dress code to a D&D campaign session.

Stay tuned for more Maelstrom news, as we have plenty more television productions to announce once they officially air. You can also purchase the STL files for these hero miniatures for your own campaigns, so stay tuned for updates through our social media on when our online store goes live.

At the Place of Ghosts - Short Film
July 23rd/2025

We had the pleasure of designing some props for the production of this short film, made here in Halifax, NS. It’s just been officially selected for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) playing alongside other great films and shorts. A huge shout out to all involved in the production! This is a huge win for representation in cinema not to mention Nova Scotia made films.

We couldn't be more proud of being a part of the process. We will include photos of our designed props, once we're allowed to do so (NDA's lift) and the film completes its festival run.

Directed by L'nu filmmaker Bretten Hannam (Wildhood, TIFF ’21), Sk+te'kmujue'katik (At the Place of Ghosts) is an eerie thriller focusing on two Mi’kmaw brothers confronting their past trauma. You can find more information about the film here at the TIFF website.

Feed - Proof of Concept
April 9th/2025

Last year, Maelstrom's own Skyler Greencorn got the opportunity to work alongside Cassie Seaboyer to complete some very cool effects work for this short horror proof of concept, for the film "Feed". It was a total blast working through the creative process to design something for the short that was both original and shocking. Combining digital and practical methods made for a dream team scenario between Greencorn and Seaboyer, a work dynamic that has led to more productions and collaborations with Cassie going forward.

Directed by Nancy Urich, the film has been made part of the Fantasia - Cannes Festival selection. "Feed" features real life horror combined with folklore and some 80s/90s inspirations. A sore breast-feeding mother is offered a cream by an old lady, whose origins are horrific. With a synopsis like that, this is bound to be fun. Click the Cannes Film Festival link for more details on the short film and others within its category.

We will eventually include some behind the scenes images of the design work we completed, once given permission and the film completes its festival run. Stay tuned for more details and news by following us on social media and checking back at the Maelstrom Blog.
